Association Bernardi Guerra / The First Dedicated Hospital for Premature Babies in Europe

Who are involved in the HOSPITAL Project

The Project is based on a non-profit Organization philosophy and operation. The creator and initiator of the Project is Dr Paolo Paolazzi, who himself was involved in his grandson's premature birth.

The Hospital involves well-known experts for example Professor Gian Carlo Di Renzo, specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology - Prenatal Medicine. Special aid is provided by the Children's Hospital, Denver, which has been one of the top pediatric heart transplant centers in the USA for more than five years, and the Hospital has ranked among the top five hospitals in the number of pediatric heart transplants performed each year.

Red Cross Italy has offered one of its building, that belonged once to the Family Bernardi, to be renovated and be the main location for the Hospital. The renovations of the Building will be made and supervised by the contractor Salini S.p.A. Roma.

The dream, the premises for the Hospital, the Family and Zachary

Dr Giovanni Bernardi, maternal grandfather of Dr Paolo Paolazzi, inventor of this project was one of the most famous and popular lung specialist and has devoted almost all his life to the study and treatment of tuberculosis. To this end he founded several nursing homes. His wife Amelia Guerra, in addition to have joined and helped her husband in the establishment and implementation of care homes, was also a member of Red Cross and a big patron herself. When Amelia Guerra died at an early age, the activities of her husband Dr Giovanni Bernardi started to slowly decline and all buildings of care homes were alienated.

Many years later, in 2006, Dr Paolazzi's family experienced a painful and tragic story. His daughter Micaela, who has married an American citizen gave birth to a premature child just five months. Small Zachary has been admitted for 18 months at the Children's Hospital in Denver (Colorado). The premature baby Zachary among countless operations also went through a tracheostoma operation. The enormous sacrifices faced by the families have been rewarded and small Zachary is now out of danger and growing calm and happy.

The aims of the Hospital

The idea of Dr Paolazzi is to constitute a non-profit Organization for the Hospital, entitled to his grandparents as well as to acquire some important properties that belonged to the Bernardi family. The purpose with these properties is to perform activities concerning predominantly children.

Dr Paolazzi and his family's aim is to create a highly specialized Centre for the care of children born prematurely with the creation of clinics, a hospitalization Department, a laboratory analysis, as well as a Department of medicine maternal-foetal and newly born intensive therapy.

In the words of Dr Paolazzi:
My dream is to acquire old structures that my grandfather has created and managed in Italy, and to do a centre of excellence for care and assistance to the premature children, to alleviate the pain of many mothers and many families - which I have learned on my skin - and to cover an area of medicine that yet, here in Italy and Europe is little studied and certainly underestimated.

Why is it necessary to have such a Hospital?

Giving birth and caring for Premature Babies is an area not so much discussed, researched or solved, especially in Europe.

It is a specialized area, needing more focus, more attention and maybe more protection for the future of our Planet.

What is the role of Red Cross?

The location of the future Hospital is situated at the doorsteps of Ferrara, in Italy, a complex including a building that once belonged to the Bernardi family until 1961, then was purchased by the Italian Red Cross.

The national presidency of the Italian Red Cross gave availability to the Association Bernardi Guerra of the building of the future Hospital and its land surrounding it, becoming this way a major Patron of the whole Project.

Co-operation with Dodo Newman

Why HAS Dodo Newman offered her support?

The Life of every Child is extremely important and precious, as well as to save the Lives of the Ones that have already been conceived and have all the chances to see the Sun and our Planet.

This aim of providing the necessary and specialized care of premature babies is a main shortcoming in Europe, lacking adequate tools, equipment, expertise and focus.

If only One Baby can be saved and given the opportunity to live, then this Aim has already served its main purpose.

How does Dodo Newman contribute to the Project?

Dodo Newman has offered to contribute to the project by creating for free a unique Interior for the Hospital's Building.

The concept is to provide an aesthetic and inspiring environment for the Building, the Place where babies are given the chance to live and mothers the chance to raise their children.

The "tools" that Dodo offers for the Project are her works of art on Plexiglas that will provide an aura of happiness, joy and hope.

Besides her Works of Inspiration, Dodo fights to make the aim bigger and to have more funds available for the further development of the Hospital for Premature Babies.

"You are the master of the visual art. Your art pieces speak louder than you. It is not only play of the color and strokes, but there is a design in dance rhythm, lyricism in art and a symphony of vibrating images. There is an unexplained mysticism in your art work. Your paintings have a very high value art."
Rajinder S. Bedi - PEACE EMISSARY (WICO) (India)

"In art the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can inspire.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson) Dodo Newman auction for the Reconstruction of Haiti with Red Cross France, during the Cannes Film Festival 2010, was a superb initiative and a noble example for all those who can dedicate their work and talent for the humanitarian cause of Haiti. More than six months after of the Haiti earthquake, population is still waiting a large part of the promised support. Now, with that tragedy out of the media headlines, it is our duty help to keep that flame present. I sincerely hope to see the “Inspirationalist” Artist in further events. Dodo is, in fact, an authentic Goodwill Ambassador. Her genius inspires and is powerful - to ignite good flames in our hearts."

"Dodo is one of the best artist and wonderful friend in the world. I admire her."
Huseyin Erim - E-CONSULTANCY (Turkey)

"Dodo Newman is a very unique and rare contemporary artist. She expresses her artistic passion through conventional painting hinting on Synthetic Cubism to postmodern experiments with glass, gold and textures. She is a master of colour, inception and dreams. Dodo’s humanitarian efforts for Haiti are close to my heart as I am addicted to both art and Philanthropy myself, where I too believe that art and culture can save the planet. An impressive art collection strengthens your corporate image, improves client's first impression of you and makes a bold statement of your company's identity. According to Kondratieff economic theory we are in a contractive cycle, where for the next 17 years wealth will be made mostly from tangible assets, including art. Dr Moses at the Stern Business School found art a fantastic investment with minimal correlation to other asset classes and a long-term average return of 10.47% alike SP500 of 10.95%. In the past 10 years contemporary art outperformed equities, bonds, property, hedge funds, private equity and a smart investor should consider Dodo’s works as part of their investment portfolio.
With US struggling to pay the government debt and printing money like never before, Europe on a brink of collapse (in my view Ireland and France are about to ignite shortly), why not reinvest a part of your collapsing stocks portfolio into contemporary art? It will never go down to zero, like Enron..."

Dr. Greg Nazvanov - #1 MOST CONNECTED FINANCIAL ADVISER (Australia)

"Dodo Newman is a gifted artist. I had the opportunity to see her work on line then in person at events taking place during the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. I find her work to be striking, innovative and fresh. In particular, I enjoy her use and contrast of color to create vibrant and exciting pieces. I look forward to her visit to Miami for Art Basel this winter. I have contacts here that I know will also appreciate her work."
Glenn D. Harris - THE ESCAPES GROUP (U.S.A.)

"Dodo displays her beautiful, organic, abstract paintings that are exciting and elegant to look at. The technique she uses combines many aspects of contemporary art and appeals to an upmarket, high-end clientele. I recommend her work, as it is stylish, trendy and enjoyable in any home, as well as corporate setting."
Annett E. Bank - Fine Art (U.K.)

"Dodo is a very competent business partner and a real initiator. She makes thing happen and is a good sequel. I'll hereby give her my best recommendations."
