"Home⦠It is a very difficult concept for me. Where is home? Is it defined by the passport or by the beat of your heart? Or where we lived most? It was always a hard question for me."
Although Dodo Newman was born in Hungary the first pages of her memories are tied the most to India. Her first two years as a child were spent in Budapest, Hungary, but she was never related to Hungary with her heart. She declares herself more Italian, rather than anything else. But to understand her we have to understand the stations of her life. How a child went through the deepest nightmares starting from Hungary, how she found her "life colors" in India and who she became during each stations of her life.
Dodo Newman was born as Dorottya Novak on the 23rd December 1974. Novak represents Newman in English and Dodo was her nick name.
The year was nineteen seventy four,
When this child arrived,
Just before Christmas
When her spirit came alive.
But you can not choose your family,
Only your faith keeps you alive.
In her destiny
The dark side early came alive.
Dodo Newman's parents are Hungarian. Her father, Ivan Novak was a diplomat and currently he is the national president of the Chaine Des Rotisseurs.
Her mother Judit Dalma Bordacs, left her when she was only two years old. Her mother continuously tried suicide attempts, so Dodo's father decided to move to India, far away from Dodo's mother.
As Dodo Newman remembers her mother there was no heating in her room and not even love around. Her mother often ate in front of Dodo, but she denied the food from the little child. Dodo simply wasn't important enough for her mother to give her the chance to live.
She grew up in the cold,
Without heating around,
There wasn't food on the table,
Ain't no love around.
Her mother's aim was only a suicide,
And this poor child felt this every night.
Dark nights, covered with screams and scares,
Frozen breaths in the cold, rigid air.
Luckily Dodo wasn't alone in her early years. Her grandmother was always there for her. Her grandmother was the person who took care of the young child, gave her food and blanket to keep the little baby warm. Since the beginning Dodo has a very special bonding with her grandmother. Her grandmother never gave up caring for her and she was there for Dodo when everybody else vanished. And still nowadays when they meet her grandmother keeps Dodo's hands warm just as she did many years ago. Dodo Newman's grandmother will be 100 years old next year and Dodo dedicated to her the Centenary Titanic project.
Every night she had a secret visitor,
A nice old lady, her angel.
Her grandmother was who brought her tea every night,
And warmed her little hands to keep her alive.
Her life wasn't easy, not at all,
The first fears came early and formed her soul.
This is the experience, that nobody wants,
But to reach happiness it is the start.
This babygirl changed for good early in her life,
These nights placed something deep in her heart.
Some kind of ink mixed with her blood,
And tried to kill the hope, what she already got.
There are many heart breaking thoughts in the book about Dodo Newman's life, The Inspirationalist. As Dodo remembers:
"It is difficult to be a child having your mother cutting her own veins next to you while you are playing and crying because you are helpless. Your only hope is to cry loud enough to have someone hear it and hurry to help you.
I think already in my childhood my task was to look after my mother, that is to always save her with with my crying. It was a weird relationship and at the same time an abhorrent break of the spirit. I had to stand up and live from here. I was around two when she left us, only a few can really know this pain."
When Dodo was just two years old her father decided to divorce from her mother. It was too much for a little child to scream almost every night, feeling her mother trying to desperately end her life.
The dark shadows appeared early in her life,
Her mother left her when she was a baby child.
Just before her third birthday her life totally changed,
Her mother tried again a suicide, but she nevertheless failed.
The little child who grew up without a mother in an untraditional way,
Suffered a lot under her mother's shame.
Her father was a diplomat, a very nice man,
Who took her with himself and found out a plan.
They went to India, far away from home,
A new place where this little girl can grow.
Colours and sparkles covered with sea,
This was her life-energy, her happiness tree.
Dodo and her father left Europe and they went to India. That was the place where the little child finally found some peace, but it was just a temporary illusion. But still, India represents the first and maybe one of the most important part of Dodo Newman's life. |
